The Design Story
A mirror folded like origami
In 2021 humanity launched the largest space telescope ever built — a golden mirror of eighteen hexagonal segments, folded like origami to fit its rocket and unfurled a million miles from Earth. Its purpose: to catch the first light of the universe, the faint glow of galaxies that set out toward us more than thirteen billion years ago.
This design renders that instrument in full — the segmented mirror and sunshield adrift among galaxies and nebulae — drawn like a plate from an old star atlas, the year 2021 struck beneath it.
